We offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the Diploma Programme (DP) forming a IB continuum for children from 3 to 18. Alongside our full-spectrum International Baccalaureate programme, students follow lessons in line with the Italian education system and may take the Grade 6 Idoneità and the Grade 9 Terza Media examination.

IB Programme

An IB education provides opportunities to develop both disciplinary and interdisciplinary understanding that meet rigorous standards set by institutions of higher learning around the world. Each of the three IB programmes we offer provides curriculum frameworks and courses that are broad and balanced, conceptual and connected. IS Siena has an excellent track record in using group dynamics, innovative teaching techniques, and tools that are updated continuously.

IB Subjects

We offer a wide range of subjects to cater for the needs of all of our IB students, particularly for an international school of our modest size. IB candidates undertaking the IB Diploma Programme are given every opportunity to choose the courses that suit them, so that they can gain entry to their course of choice, succeed in higher education and flourish on their chosen career path.

Subject choices are as outlined:

  • two modern languages
  • a humanities or a social science subject
  • an experimental science
  • mathematics
  • an arts subject or an additional subject from one of the aforementioned groups.

All students study Theory of Knowledge, complete a 4000 word independent research Extended Essay and are involved in the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) programme.

The IB PYP, MYP and DP are taught alongside national curriculum courses. The humanities and arts programmes that students receive are wonderfully relevant to the school's heritage, and children gain an appreciation of themselves in a national and global context.

Assessment in all three IB programmes is rigorous, criterion referenced and and designed to allow each student to demonstrate knowledge, skills and understanding at the appropriate level. Internal assessment is carried out by experienced classroom teachers and external assessments take place under exam conditions for students in Grades 11 and 13.

Senior learners undertaking the DP course will be required to complete a combination of research projects, coursework and formal examinations in the final year of the 2-year international course. Subject-based examinations are invigilated by IB-authorised staff, and an examination schedule will be given to students well ahead of the IB assessment period.
