VIRTUAL LEARNING

MAR 23 2020

Following the additional ministerial decree published on March 9th confirming that all schools, nationally, will be closed until permitted by government decree, our ‘virtual’ schools will therefore continue to operate until this date.

The implementation of this has been met positively as we have strived in the face of adversity to continue the education of our students; acting quickly to leverage the technology and e-learning capabilities of the Inspired group and supporting the skills required for independent learning.

A huge thank you extended to the entire school community of students, parents, guardians, teachers and non-teaching staff for your support in making this a success.

MUSIC AT IS SIENA

Music is an integral part of the PYP Programme of Inquiry at ISSiena and all students receive 2 sessions per week. The curriculum looks at how we respond to music, drawing on personal experiences, building understanding of musical notation and developing the skills needed to create and perform music.

The arts are important areas of learning in the Primary Years Programme. Students will learn the disciplines of visual arts, music and drama, as well as learning about the arts (the skills and processes involved) and through the arts (artists, perspectives, themes and ideas using the arts).

Creativity is at the heart of the arts. It allows for innovation, interpretation, research, analysis and transfer. Learning through the arts has a positive influence on self-esteem and creative development, which needs to carry over to all aspects of learning. Valuing imagination and celebrating original thinking promotes initiative and a lifelong love of learning.

VISUAL ART AT IS SIENA

Visual Art is the most advanced tool for students to develop their creativity through creating a product themselves. Creativity also supports students in consolidating their personality and self-esteem, enabling them to consider different perspectives while approaching their daily life.

Learning through Visual Art helps students to explore and communicate their sense of identity and individuality. Visual Art also encourages them to become thinkers that use creative and critical skills to solve problems and to become risk-takers able to balance the different aspects of life: intellectual, emotional and physical. Those aspects are included in the “IB learner profile” and are crucial for our students’ wellbeing.

DRAMA AT IS SIENA

Drama lessons are taught in the PYP from Grades 2-6 the MYP in Grades 7,8 and 9. The whole school is involved in the two spring productions; one for PYP and one for MYP and DP. Students can get involved in all aspects of the production; from lighting and stage management to costume or set design; from graphic design of posters and tickets, to acting.

In this way, a sense of community is enhanced throughout the school as students of different ages are working towards a common goal, encouraged to express themselves through physical theatre, script work, voice and movement.

Whilst learning the Arts, children learn to work together, express their creativity, and learn important life lesson lessons about teamwork, collaboration and creativity.

MAYOR VISITING OUR SCHOOL

The Mayor of Siena, Luigi De Mossi, visits the school and meets teachers and students.

On Tuesday, the Mayor of Siena visited the school and toured around the classrooms and teaching spaces.
The Mayor chatted with students across all age groups and he was very interested in the IB curriculum programme and the high quality work that he observed in the classrooms as well as the multilingual environment.

Our fantastic indoor Gym was very exciting for him and he played some Basketball for a while with Mirco! Thanks to Isla (Gr. 10) and Mirco (Gr. 11), who joined the Mayor and his team for the tour as they were able to offer their perspective and experience of our school and answer questions about different parts of the whole school.

Our Gr. 10 students shared their textiles and textures project in our Visual Art room.
